Far too many people have incorrect assumptions about weight loss. They assume that exercise is only designed to help burn away calories, so they skip exercising and instead eat less in their diets.
Rapid weight loss has nothing to do with how much you eat - it has to do with how well you can maintain a high metabolism, and how well that metabolism is able to quickly burn away calories. This is why exercising is so important - increasing the size and strength of your muscles means that your muscles require more energy in order to stay healthy and strong.
Exercising Muscles and Metabolism
The predominate assumption is that if you spend an hour on the treadmill and burn 600 calories, then when you leave the treadmill you have burned 600 calories of your daily meal. But that is actually considerably inaccurate.
Yes, you may have burned 600 calories on the treadmill, but now you have improved the strength of your heart and your muscles. Now your heart and your muscles require more energy to stay healthy
- because they are stronger, and need more resources. So while they may have originally needed 400 more calories over the course of the day, now they need 450.
Go to the treadmill again, and your heart is even stronger. Not only did you burn the 600 calories again, but with the increase in your muscles and heart, you now need 500 calories over the course of the day in order to keep them healthy.
If you will notice, the more you exercise the more calories your body needs each day to function - even when your body is resting. You are burning calories even when you are laying down (albeit very little), and when your muscles are larger and require more calories to function, you are burning more calories every day even when you are not performing exercise activity.
The effect is exponential - the more muscle you gain, the more weight loss you are going to experience every day, even if you work out exactly the same. It has nothing to do with how much you worked out on a particular day (though that is obviously a great benefit) - it has to do with how much your muscle mass is able to improve your metabolism.
Muscles are Very Important
That is why it is not just about the diet you choose to do when you decide you want rapid weight loss. It is also about the exercise. Exercise is so important in order to lose weight that those that don't often find that if they ever decide to quit their diet, their weight comes right back.
But those that do exercise regularly find that if they quit their diet (while maintaining healthy eating habits) but continue to exercise, their bodies are going to be able to maintain their lower weight and possibly even continue to lose weight if there is any weight to lose. You can choose which diet you want to follow, but it is vital that you exercise as well.
